The Malawi Government and the European Union (EU) jointly launched the Multiannual Indicative Programme (MIP) as a Development Cooperation Framework covering the period from 2021 to 2027 on 2nd March 2022. Following the launch, the two partners signed six Financing Agreements (FAs) worth EUR125 Million (approximately MWK128 Billion) to kickstart implementation of various programmes under the MIP 2021-2027 which has a total allocation of EUR352 Million for Malawi. The signing ceremony took place in Lilongwe on 28th October 2022 at the Bingu wa Mutharika International Convention Center (BICC).

The signing ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Honorable Sosten Gwengwe, MP and the EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen on behalf of the Malawi Government and the European Union respectively. The following are the six FAs signed for the above captioned initial phase:

  1. Greening and Growing Malawi Programme – Ulimi ndi Chilingedwe m’Malawi (UCHI) – EUR56.5million
  2. The Malawi Energy Programme – Wala Malawi – EUR10.5million
  3. Access to Justice Programme – Chilungamo II – EUR17million
  4. Malawi Democratic Governance Programme – Boma Lathu – EUR17million
  5. Malawi Cooperation Facility - EUR9million
  6. Response to Global Food Security – EUR15million
