
The 9th European Development Fund (EDF) cycle was from 2002 to 2007. It had a budget allocation of €276 million. There was an extra €24 million, to make a total allocation of €300 million.
Food and Agriculture Sector
The overall objective of the sector is to reduce poverty and hunger in an environmentally sustainable manner. One of the interventions under this sector was the Improved Forestry Management for Sustainable Livelihoods Project - Phase I. The project was implemented from 2005 to 2011. It had a total budget allocation of €9 million.
Transport and Infrastructure
The objective is to reduce poverty through enhanced regional interconnection, based on a sound multimodal transport policy, which has the potential to boost Malawi’s economy. Some of the projects were rehabilitation/construction of M1, Golomoti-Monkey Bay Road, the Malawi Backlog Road Rehabilitation and Maintenance (MABARM) and Rural Feeder Roads Programme (RUFROP)
Non-focal Sectors: Economics and Good Governance
The overall objective of non-focal sector is to reduce poverty through promotion of economic growth in line with the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS), through mainstreaming of cross-cutting issues.
Some of the projects implemented were promotion of the rule of law and civic education in Malawi and Technical Cooperation Facility (TCF) II.
