Salima Technical College is expected to benefit from STEPSkills and Technical Education Programme (STEP) is one of the programmes under Education and TVET Sector in the 11th European Development Fund (EDF).

The overall objective of STEP is to empower the Technical and Vocational Education Training sector and its capacity to satisfy the economy’s need for skilled professionals.

This is done through expansion and improvement of equitable and gender-balanced vocational education training. 

The project is also aimed at improving quality and relevance of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TEVET), and strengthening the governance and management of TEVET regulatory bodies and training institutions.

It is also the wish of the project to establish better regulations and procedures and effective decentralised governance and management of TEVET training institutions.

Koen Doens, Authorising Officer of the EDF signed the Financing Agreement on 9 September 2015, in Brussels, Belgium on behalf of the European Commission (EC).  On behalf of the Government of Malawi, the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Hon. Goodall Gondwe, signed the agreement on 18 November 2015.

The programme has a total allocation of €32,725,000. With this support, the EU becomes the largest donor alongside the World Bank.  The project is being implemented in Malawi’s 18 districts. It includes four technical colleges, 10 community colleges, 10 rural skills and development centres and 3 trading centres.
