European Union has granted funds to Oxfam and Catholic Health Commission (CHC) through the Government of Malawi (GoM) to the tune of EUR 1.5 million to implement a 3 years (December 2016 - November 2019) Nutrition and Food Security project “Enhancing the Capacity of Civil Society Organisations, district level staff and communities in scaling up nutrition in Malawi.” This project is under FIDP phase 2 SUN component aimed at contributing towards improved nutritional status of rural households in Malawi.

There will be capacity enhancement of rural households and district level staff to enable them address nutrition issues related to agriculture and Scaling up Nutrition (SUN) 1,000 days initiatives implementation in the targeted districts. The action will benefit about 26,000 households in four districts of Salima (T/As Kambwiri and Kambalame), Nkhotakota (T/As Mwadzama and Malengachanzi), Lilongwe in T/A Chitekwele and Dowa in T/A Mkukula. 

The initiative was launched by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Hon. Aggrey Masi MP at Katelera Primary School Ground, GVH Ngolomi, T/A Kambwiri in Salima on 14th June, 2017.

The event was patronised by representatives from Ministries of Agriculture – DAES and Health - DNHA, NAO Support Unit, EU Delegation, FIDP, Oxfam, CHC, FTC, GIZ, District Councils and DNCCs (from Salima, Nkhotakota, Lilongwe and Dowa), WFP, Malawi Mangoes, beneficiary TAs and the surrounding communities. 
Several Nutrition and Food Security displays were mounted and these were augmented with different nutrition messages from the local performances such as drama, songs and dances.

EU Delegation’s Team Leader for Sustainable agriculture, Mehdi Mahjoub speaking during the SUN project launch about their commitment to support the initiative in order to reduce stunting and poverty in Malawi.

The Deputy Country Director for Oxfam Miss Lingalireni Mihowa acknowledging the financial support from the EU through the GoM for the implementation of the SUN project. She pledged OXFAM commitment and asked for stakeholders’ support towards the successful implementation in the targeted TAs of Salima, Dowa, Nkhotakota and Lilongwe.

TA Kambwiri gladly welcoming the SUN project during the launch at Katelera Primary School ground in Salima on behalf of all the targeted district and TAs. He encouraged all the councils, TAs and communities to give their required support towards the successful implementation for more benefits to the people.
